Almost every U.S. state has that one thing it does better than others. Many experts now say that for Michigan, that could be the automotive industry. This comes as no surprise to those who know the state’s history well. The auto industry and manufacturing as a whole has strong roots in Michigan’s largest city.
According to Forbes, the worldwide automotive industry calls Detroit home. It recently carried on this legacy when it won the business of a German company looking to manufacture batteries for commercial electric vehicles in America. Production begins in 2020. Over the next half a decade, it will introduce 200 new jobs to the area.
As far back as 2015, Michigan was already manufacturing more vehicles than any other U.S. state. MLive estimates that the state is responsible for roughly 23% of all motor vehicle manufacturing. To add to this, of the top 100 auto suppliers in America, 63 of them are located in Michigan. This is impressive considering it has 50 other states to potentially share that business with. Not surprisingly, the state pocketed as much as $17.5 billion — if not higher — for just one year alone in investments from the auto industry.
Michigan may also soon attract more business from developers in the driverless car arena. By 2015, it was already one of only four states with laws in place to allow autonomous vehicles on the roads. As Tesla, Mercedez Benz and other high-end vehicle manufacturers experiment with not just autonomous cars but self-driving commercial trucks, they might just call the Great Lake State home for these operations.
